• What value does the SlimPort® logo offer to the consumer of mobile devices with USB Type-C™ ports?

The USB Type-C connectivity offers many options.  The challenge for the consumer is knowing what functionality the connection offers on each device without having to open the owner’s manual. The SlimPort brand/logo has always been identified with video over USB on mobile devices, so this brand value and functionality will continue with USB Type-C.  Any device or accessory with the SlimPort logo signifies that the product supports video over USB.

  • How is SlimPort® different from DisplayPort™?

SlimPort is a brand of products from Analogix whereas DisplayPort is a technology standard owned by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). SlimPort branded products are compliant with DisplayPort, Mobility DisplayPort (MyDP), and DisplayPort Alt Mode over the USB Type-C connector.

VESA has defined guidelines on how to build DisplayPort converter products compatible with legacy and other current display standards. Through its rigorous DisplayPort standard compliance program, VESA ensures that DisplayPort certified products are fully interoperable.

Analogix tests SlimPort branded products to ensure interoperability with each other and with other DisplayPort enabled consumer devices from leading manufacturers. Analogix offers these testing services through the SlimPort Adopters Program (SAP℠).

  • What kind of products can be certified?

SAP is offered for both Micro-B and USB Type-C devices, hubs/switchers and displays running Android or Microsoft OS.

  • What does the SlimPort logo on a device signify compared to a DisplayPort logo on a device?

The SlimPort logo on a device signifies that the device is SlimPort certified.

The certification process confirms compatibility with DisplayPort and then it goes beyond that with added compatibility tests for HDMI, VGA, and USB power/data detect by including extensive interoperation testing with a broad range of display devices.

The DisplayPort logo on the other hand is used to:

Identify a DisplayPort receptacle (port identification), or cable, for the convenience of the product user;
Identify a product as having DisplayPort capability. Logo on product, or on product collateral including instruction manual and advertising, to denote DisplayPort capability (must pass compliance testing to be used on a product or product collateral)
Indicate that a device has been tested to be DisplayPort compliant.

  • Does the SAP certification eliminate the need for other certifications such as for HDMI or USB?

No. The SAP certification only allows use of the SlimPort logo. Logo usage policies and procedures must still be followed for the other technologies and standards, if the manufacturer chooses to use them.

Is the use of Analogix parts required to take advantage of the program?

No, the program is open to all.

  • What is the cost of the program?  Does it help to reduce overall certification costs?

The SAP provides manufacturers a way to test that their products are compatible with existing display standards if they do not plan to go through full certification for the various formats in the market.

The SAP can be a considerable cost-saving option. Significant discounts are provided if the SlimPort logo is displayed on the product or marketing material, and/or Analogix products are used.
