DisplayPort Shows Off HBR3 and USB Type-C Success at CES 2017

2017-01-11

DisplayPort technology was on full display at the DisplayPort booth in CES 2017.

AMD and Realtek were demonstrating the new DisplayPort 1.4 spec that supports Digital Stream Compression (DSC) 1.2 and HBR3 (8.1 Gb/s per lane) that can support 8K@60hz with 10-bit color and HDR10 and 4K@120hz with 10-bit color and HDR10.

AMD also showed DisplayPort's Adaptive Sync (branded by AMD as FreeSync) which allows variation in refresh rates to create a smoother gaming and video playback experience.  This works with displays like the LG 27 inch Class Ultra HD IPS 4K 27UD88-W Monitor which also supports Adaptive Sync.

Wireless implementations of DisplayPort was also shown through demo's from Keyssa showing their contactless Kiss Connectivity technology.

Use of DisplayPort in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Personal Cinema Headsets looks to become very popular, taking advantage of being able to connect PC's and gaming consoles to headsets using a single USB Type-C cable.

In Analogix's SlimPort booth, DisplayPort over USB Type-C was also on display in various Android phones like the LG G5.  Note SlimPort is Analogix's brand name for their DisplayPort implementations over a micro USB Type-B or USB Type-C connector.

DisplayPort has come a long way since its early days as an alternative to HDMI and continues to have a promising innovation path going forward.
