Analogix Announces Availability of DisplayPort to LVDS Converter IC

New device bridges gap in panel interface transition, offering system manufacturers greater flexibility

Analogix Semiconductor, Inc., a manufacturer and innovator of high-performance analog and mixed signal devices for the digital media and communications markets, today announced the availability of a DisplayPort to LVDS converter IC. The ANX1120 is designed to allow OEMs to offer the advantages of the latest DisplayPort enabled source devices to consumers while still using existing LVDS enabled displays. Bridging the gap between next generation technology and established technology, the ANX1120 offers OEMs increased flexibility to deliver valued added systems.

LVDS is a widely used interface that transmits video pixel data from the graphical drawing engine to displays in applications that embed LCDs such as notebooks, tablets, all in one PCs, monitors and TVs. As the need increases for higher resolutions, lower power and higher integration, LVDS becomes less optimal and the need for a new interface grows. Offering higher bandwidth, lower EMI, lower power, greater silicon efficiency and lower pin count, DisplayPort has been designed to meet these challenges and provide solutions for next generation systems

“By utilizing the ANX1120, OEMs are able to take advantage of the latest technology and advancements on the source chipset side while still being compatible with existing display technology,” said Graham Loveridge, Vice President of Marketing at Analogix. “The ANX1120 complements our existing line of DisplayPort Timing Controllers giving system manufacturers the ability to use either LVDS or DisplayPort enabled displays. This gives OEMs and display manufacturers the flexibility to manage their product transitions and deliver the latest innovative products while maximizing their profitability.”

As with all transitions there is a period of time when conversion between the new and old standards is required. Today the advantages of DisplayPort on the source side are significantly greater than those on the display side. The ANX1120 is specifically designed to bridge this gap, allowing system manufacturers to take advantage of next generation DisplayPort enabled devices while using existing LVDS displays. This in turn allows OEMs to immediately offer the advantages of next generation DisplayPort enabled source devices to the consumer, while also planning for the future transition to DisplayPort enabled displays.

The ANX1120 supports up to a 2-lane DisplayPort input and offers dual channel 24-bits per pixel LVDS output. The device can support display resolutions up to WUXGA (1920x1200) with a 60Hz refresh rate. It offers low power operation with several power saving modes and spread spectrum clocking to further reduce EMI. Offering control through the DisplayPort AUX channel, the ANX1120 reduces the bill of materials and eliminates the need for additional electronics by allowing the source device to directly control the ANX1120.

Available in a 64-pin QFN RoHS compliant and halogen free package, the ANX1120 is currently shipping to early adopters with production volumes available at the end of 2010.
